Pole Barn Insulation

We have supplied EPS insulation for over hundreds of pole barns and garages.  EPS rigid insulation does not deteriorate and its moisture retention is less than 3%. Thus, you do not need a moisture barrier.  EPS is also resistant to insects and mice. For wall cavities and ceilings, a TYPE I EPS with a 1-pound density is the appropriate specification.  The R-Value is 4.17 per inch of thickness.

Figure 1 shows a typical cross section of a pole barn wall.  A common choice is to install
1.5″ EPS sheets between the wall girts as shown.  By cutting the sheets 1/16” larger than
the cavity, you can force fit the EPS between the girts.  Alternatively, you can fasten
the EPS to the exterior siding with Loctite PL Premium Construction Adhesive.  If you
intend to cover the insulated wall with wood, metal, or drywall, then there is no need for
adhesive.  Since heat rises, it is then best to insulate the ceiling with a much higher R-Value.

For a finished wall system with a higher R-Value, you can simply add an additional layer of
EPS.  Since we can manufacture the sheets in any thickness, you can accurately achieve your desired R-Value.  See Figure 2.  The outer layer of EPS can easily be fastened with Loctite PL Premium Construction Adhesive.  We can also supply 1”x 2”x 96” strips that can be glued over the seams, which gives the wall a “board and batten” appearance.  Then simply finish the EPS with a good acrylic paint.

For ceilings, we’ve come up with a proprietary design that is easy to install and cost effective.  Take a look at Figure 3.  By fastening EPS ledgers on both sides of the lower truss members, you create a sturdy support system for thick EPS panels.  The advantages are:

  • Easy installation
  • High R-Value to your specification
  • Multiple access points to the space above the ceiling
  • Paintable finished surface
  • No expense for drywall or wood

To insulate a 40’x 60’ ceiling with an R-Value of 25, the cost would be well under $6K. This includes the EPS, fasteners, construction adhesive, and tax.  You can call 610-750-4411 for quick pricing and lead times.
